Alan Shearer speaks out
Newcastle boss praises his troops

It's all rosy once again at St James' Park as Alan Shearer has led his team to the top of the Championship table. Not only that but Shearer has brought the fine attacking football and plenty of goals.

Shearer said: "The relegation hit us pretty hard. I hoped to keep this club up, but we just couldn't stay up. In the end it seems to have been somewhat of a blessing and we'll come up better and stronger. I have to praise the lads who decided to stay on and battle for the promotion."

Newcastle United have scored 82 goals in just 24 games and Shearer is very proud of the team's efforts in front of goal: "I stressed the importance of playing attacking football, as the best form of defense is attack. I've got here 4 excellent strikers and all of them are on fire and with creative spark in midfield, it seems, that we just love to score goals."

Despite a number of Newcastle's top players being linked with a move away from the club, Shearer insists that none of them are for sale.

"I know Steven (Taylor) and Jonas (Gutierrez) are moving here and there every day, but the matter of the fact is that we are not looking to sell our first team regulars. All the selling was done in the summer, and now we are looking to add two or three players and possibly let a few reserves go to find first team football."

"I stress again that Steven Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez have long term contracts with the club and have said nothing to me about wanting to move."

Contract talks

Alan Shearer also dismissed any talk of him joining the Premier League strugglers Sunderland and Portsmouth as their next manager.

"I am committed to Newcastle United 100%. My sole objective is to bring us back up and I am not interested in other jobs be that Sunderland or Real Madrid or whoever."

"My agent and I are about to sat down with the club to have our contract talks about possibility of extending my stay at the club beyond this season. I am enjoying my life as Newcastle manager and I want to lift this club to the new level."

Matchday 25
Sheffield Wednesday 1 - 1 Newcastle United

Goals: Marsland; Ronaldo

Sky Sports verdict:

Newcastle kept their unbeaten tag despite Wednesday's best efforts.

Man of the match:

Team captain Ronaldo's 87th minute strike earned Newcastle a point.

Matchday 25
Newcastle United 5 - 0 Leicester City

Goals: Gutierrez, Sinclair, Ronaldo x 2, Shelvey

Sky Sports verdict:

Newcastle capped off the final matchday of 2009 with a superb performance against Leicester.

Man of the match:

Jonas Gutierrez produced a dominant display in the middle of the park and scored his 7th goal of the season.

Sky Sports verdict:

At the end of 2009 Newcastle are 17 points clear at the top of the table. It is amazing to see how Alan Shearer has turned a sinking ship into an unstoppable submarine. Team captain Ronaldo is telling Dunga to re-call him for the World Cup in South Africa and he has a point - he has bagged 25 goals this term already. It will be interesting to follow the transfer activity in the club in the January period. Real Madrid claim that Jonas Gutierrez is desperate to join them, Shearer says Jonas is happy to stay - we shall find out who stays and who goes in the next 30 days or so.

Ronaldo signs new contract
Phenomenon earns a new deal

Newcastle United captain Ronaldo has put pen to paper to a new 1 year deal. The former world cup winner has impressed everyone with his return to form and he is currently top of goal scoring charts in Championship with 27 goals.

The striker had this to say to the club's website: "I am very happy in England. I am scoring goals, the team is winning games."

"Alan (Shearer) has had a very positive impact on my career - I am quite happy to play 3 or 4 games and then to be given a rest."

"I am happy to sign a new contract, this means that I'll get a chance to play in Premier League next season when we get promoted. I've played in Serie A and in La Liga and it would be great to have played in Premier League."

"I have to thank all the fans who have been so welcoming since I've come here and I hope to score more goals for them."

Dream

Ronaldo is hoping that his chance will come, but accepts that he remains some way off the fitness level required to compete at international level.

"My dream is to have the chance to play again for Brazil," he told TV Globo.

"I have worked very hard to play again so now I have to work even harder to find my best form and have the chance to play for Brazil.

"My dream is to again be in the national team, it's where I have been the most happy. I think that I will manage to find form.

"I still have to lose some weight, and keep on training to get stronger, but I know that I am going to manage because I am very serious about my recovery."

Vital

Meanwhile, defender Sebastien Bassong has penned a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2014. The defender has been vital in Newcastle's heart of defence and despite interest from Inter and Arsenal the defender has agreed to stay with the Magpies.

Round 4
Blackburn Rovers 1 - 3 Newcastle United

Goals: Pedersen; Ronaldo x 2, Ponce

Sky Sports verdict:

Newcastle came back from a goal down to knock out Alan Shearer's former club and progress into another domestic quarter final.

Man of the match:

Former world player of the year Ronaldo celebrated his new contract with a double.

Matchday 31
Queens Park Rangers 1 - 3 Newcastle United

Goals: Blackstock; Ronaldo x 2, Duff

Sky Sports verdict:

Alan Shearer's men seem unstoppable right now with yet another win that keeps them on course to a swift return to Premier League.

Man of the match:

Ronaldo stole the headlines again, as he scored a double and set up the other.

Sky Sports verdict:

With January over Newcastle fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the club have managed to hang on to their most valued assets, in fact they managed to tie striker Ronaldo, who is a goal shy of the 30 mark, to a new deal as well as hang on to defensive trio Tozer, Bassong and Taylor with club's valuations not being met. Newcastle are now in cruise control as they are grinding out one win after another and putting in an emphatic performance now and then. They, perhaps, have also surprised everyone by progressing into both FA Cup and Carling Cup quarter finals but will the busy schedule eventually damage their bid for silverware - it remains to be seen.

Leyton Orient 1 - 7 Newcastle United

Goals: Boyd; Hampton x 4, Vlaar (Pen), Falcao x 2

Sky Sports verdict:

Newcastle have progressed into the FA Cup semi-final for the first time since 2005 by destroying any hopes Leyton Orient had of getting to Wembley. Alan Shearer's men will face Liverpool at Wembley, meanwhile in the other semi Middlesbrough will take on Man City for a place in the final.

Man of the match:

Shaun Hampton scored 4 goals as he continues his run out in the cup games. The striker is being tooted for a shock call-up to the England senior squad as Capello's scouts were spotted amongst the crowd.

Matchday 32
Newcastle United 5 - 3 Preston North End

Goals: Ronaldo x 2, Gutierrez x 2, Tozer; Whaley, Sedgwick, Carter (Pen)

Sky Sports verdict:

Newcastle overcame a late come back from Preston but Alan Shearer was less than impressed by the 3 goals conceded.

Man of the match:

Jonas Gutierrez came back into the fold after being rested against Leyton and produced a fine display with 2 goals and an assist.

Marco Santos stays on.
The Brazilian keeper signs a new long term deal.

Young goalkeeper Marco Santos has penned a new deal that will keep him at Newcastle till 2015. The Brazilian u21 international already has 12 caps at this level and is tipped for a bright future by his coaches in Brazil.

The youngster has made 4 appearances this season with 3 of them coming in the cup competitions.

Alan Shearer has heaped praise on the youngster: "Marco is a fantastic keeper. When he made the step up he has delivered and never let us down. We are happy to reward his patience with a new deal."

"He will start against Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup quarter-final and I have all the confidence in the world that he will do well."

Upset

Meanwhile former Flamengo ace revealed that he had an offer from Italy rumoured to be Fiorentina: "Yes it is true a club in Italy contacted my agent about possibility of joining them as the number one goalkeeper, but we've told them that they had to speak to the club.

"I was a little upset that Newcastle refused to listen to any offers, but the club sat down with me and offered me a new deal which I happily signed. I hope I can push Yohann (Pele) for that number one spot but I am just frustrated how good he's been all season. We're good friends."

Quarter-Final
Newcastle United 1 - 0 Middlesbrough

Goals: Hampton

Sky Sports verdict:

Newcastle United secured passage into the Carling Cup semi-final after a narrow win over North-East rivals Middlesbrough. Newcastle's reward is a battle against the red half of Manchester, meanwhile in the other semi the fierce London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea will battle for a place in the final.

Man of the match:

Jose Enrique had a fantastic match, getting forward and supporting the attack as well as stopping Boro's influential midfielder Debuchy.

Matchday 33
Newcastle United 1 - 0 Leeds Utd

Goals: Jose Enrique

Sky Sports verdict:

Alan Shearer's men battled to an uneasy win over relegation strugglers Leeds Utd.

Man of the match:

Lubomir Michalik was a rock in Leeds' defence that prevented Newcastle from scoring more than once.

Sebastien Bassong has suffered an injury in the last match. The scans revealed a fractured metartasal and the Frenchman is now expected to miss up to 8 weeks of football which will include both of the Newcastle's semi-finals.

Matchday 34
Southampton 1 - 2 Newcastle United

Goals: Smith; Falcao, Gutierrez

Sky Sports verdict:

Newcastle United came back from a goal down to secure their 9th consecutive win and stretch their unbeaten run to 34 league games.

Man of the match:

Jonas Gutierrez scored the eventual match winner and his 10th goal of the season.

Semi-Final
Newcastle United 3 - 0 Manchester United

Goals: Ponce, Hampton x 2

Sky Sports verdict:

Newcastle United have a produced a major upset by beating Man Utd in the first leg of the Carling Cup. Although Alan Shearer's team may feel like it's the job done, they still face an away trip to Old Trafford. But take nothing away from this fine performance.

Man of the match:

Teenage sensation Shaun Hampton struck twice to leave Man Utd needing to overcome a 3 goal deficit. He has scored a sensational 22 goals in just 12 appearances in all competitions.

Matchday 35
Sheffield United 3 - 4 Newcastle United

Goals: Robertson, Speed x 2; Ronaldo x 2, Smith, Sinclair

Sky Sports verdict:

Alan Shearer made 9 changes to the team that beat Man Utd earlier, and he was almost made pay the price after a late inspired comeback from Sheffield United with Gary Speed at the forefront of it.

Man of the match:

Scott Sinclair showed once again that he is an excellent wide man with a bright future after he set up 2 of the goals and scored 1 himself.

Matchday 36
Newcastle United 2 - 0 Cardiff City

Goals: Ronaldo, Falcao

Sky Sports verdict:

Newcastle United have won the Championship followin a 2 - 0 win over Cardiff City, they were presented with the Football League Championship Trophy in front of the home crowd. Alan Shearer has guided the team to the promotion with 10 games to go. He was very emotional: "You know what, I promised we'd be back and we are now. This feels amazing right now and this is deffinetly up there (with other achievements)."

Man of the match:

On this historic day Ben Tozer deputised well for Jose Enrique ahead of the clash against Man United.

Sky Sports verdict:

Well the betting was suspended last month on Newcastle getting promoted and there was a sense of inevitability around St James Park when club captain Ronaldo lifted the trophy in front of the home crowd after a win against Cardiff. Newcastle can now fully concentrate on their cup games that are still to come. Yes and whilst the league success overshadows what has been a superb month for Newcastle, it is perhaps their performances in the cup competitions that have been the greater achievement with 2 domestic semi-finals and one leg already in the final of the Carling Cup after a superb win against Manchester United. Ronaldo remains top of goal scoring charts with 34 goals in 29 league appearances, whilst his team-mates Falcao and Alan Smith will be both hoping to reach the 20 mark. Meanwhile youngster Shaun Hampton will be hoping to guide his team to cup success having been Shearer's firm favourite in the cup games.

Shearer praises troops
Newcastle boss proud of his team

Following Newcastle United being crowned the Championship champions Alan Shearer gave an exclusive interview to skysports. He said that he was "extremely proud" of his team and that he hoped to achieve a top 10 spot at the very least in Newcastle's return to Premier League.

"I am still ecstatic about the win against Cardiff and then being presented a trophy. I certainly haven't lifted many of those as a player. I am extremely of this group of players, you look at the guys like Damien Duff and Steven Taylor and Joey Barton and Alan Smith who have really held the ship together then you have to consider the impact the new boys have had like Falcao and Ponce."

He then went on to praise his young troops and continued his admiration of striker and club captain Ronaldo.

"Yeah I think it's been really good having a young group of players, Ben (Tozer), David (Edgar), Seb (Bassong), Jonjo (Shelvey) and Miguel (Chissano) have all stood out. But it's probably Ronaldo who has been our player of the year. He came in with a big name, big reputation but big fitness problems also. We've given him the responsibility of a captaincy and he rose to the occasion like all great players do. He's led the line well and I just wish I had his goal scoring record myself to boast about."

Shearer then went on to dismiss any rumours of the club being in any financial trouble, and admitted that he won't be able to keep hold of all his star players in the summer.

"No, it's not true! Everyone said we would end up like Leeds plummeting through leagues with our finances spiralling out of control. I think the sales last summer were essential, Oba (Martins) going to Roma really has helped us. But we also released a few players that were big drains on our wage structure."

"Yeah, I think we might struggle to keep hold of some of the lads. Certainly we have had enquiries about several of our players but we will fight to keep hold of them."

Semi-Final

Goals: Rooney; Falcao

Sky Sports verdict:

Newcastle earned a draw thanks to an early strike from Falcao and have therefore progressed into the Carling Cup final after an 4 - 1 aggregate win over Man Utd. Juventus ace interested in a move to Tyneside

Sky Sports News understands that Newcastle are in negotiations to sign Juventus midfielder Cristiano Zanetti. The former Inter star has fallen out of favour at the Old Lady and has only made 3 appearances this season. He has now been told he can leave the club in the summer as his contract is set to expire.

Newcastle are reportedly in negotiations to sign the midfielder as they look to add some experienced players to their very young team.

Sky Sports News earlier reported that Alan Shearer has flown to Italy but the reasons were unknown. However, now our sources report that he has met with the player and his agent and the deal could be struck within next 48 hours.

Our sources also claim that Zanetti will put pen to paper on a 2 year deal worth £1.5 million a year. This could spark rumours about the futures of Joey Barton and Danny Guthrie.
