Ashley 'sorry for mistakes' Owner apologises for relegation; talks with Shearer ongoing ![]() Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has apologised for the club's relegation to the Championship. The Magpies' 16-year stay in the Premier League came to an end on Sunday after they suffered a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa. Tyneside legend Alan Shearer was appointed as the side's interim manager in April after head coach Joe Kinnear was taken seriously ill. But the former Newcastle striker was unable to save the club from demotion and he has since called for "root and branch surgery from top to bottom" at St James' Park. Mistakes Shearer was only contracted to oversee the Magpies until the end of the season but on Tuesday he was locked in talks with Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias over plans to resurrect the troubled club. In a statement on the club's official website, Ashley said: "Seeing Newcastle United relegated from the Premier League has been a catastrophe for us all. "I fully accept that mistakes were made during this and previous seasons and I am very sorry for that. "I would like to say sorry to our magnificent supporters who have turned up in their thousands, home and away, up and down the country and who have given the team amazing backing throughout. "And I would also say sorry to all of the club's hard-working staff, who have gone about their jobs all year long. Shearer talks "Bringing Alan Shearer back to Newcastle United was the best decision I have made. Alan and his staff did all they could to try and keep us up in the short space of time they had. "Talks are now ongoing between us about how we can take this club forward again." Ashley, who took over in the North East in June 2007, was chastised by supporters earlier this season following the departure of Magpies favourite Kevin Keegan. After heavy pressure, the businessman revealed he planned to sell the club, however, amid a difficult financial climate, he was unable to find a suitable buyer. Ashley turned to Kinnear in September following Keegan's exit but the former Wimbledon boss was forced to undergo triple heart bypass surgery and Chris Hughton temporarily took the reins before Shearer was appointed. ![]() Read my Newcastle United diary Updated: 28th July Things come and go but class is permanent - Chelsea FC. |

Magpies appoint Shearer Newcastle Utd have appointed former legend on permanent basis ![]() Alan Shearer has agreed to take over as Newcastle United manager on a permanent basis in a bid to return the club to Premier League. Sky Sports News revealed earlier today that Mike Ashley and Alan Shearer were in talks over a possible deal. It is understood Shearer has signed a one year deal with a possible 2 year extension. More to follow... Duff vows to stay put Magpies winger will remain loyal to fallen giants ![]() Damien Duff has pledged his allegiance to Newcastle despite seeing the club relegated to the Championship. Keen to make amends for his, and the club's, failings this term, Duff has now vowed to do all he can to help the club bounce back into the big time at the first time of asking. That means he will not be seeking a summer exit from St James' Park and will instead be leading the club's promotion charge next season. "I'm as loyal as they come and, with the gaffer (Alan Shearer) staying, I'd love to try to get Newcastle back up into the Premier League," said Duff. "I don't know what words can describe the way I feel. I'm devastated. The lads haven't tasted relegation apart from me at Blackburn and Nicky Butt at Birmingham. "When it happened at Blackburn, I wasn't planning on seeing it again in my career. It's not a nice feeling. "No disrespect to the Championship, but Newcastle are too big a club to be down there. I plan on being straight back up (in the Premier League) after next season." Duff has also praised the Magpies board for appointing Shearer on a permanent basis. "I've loved working with him," he said. "It's been a proper, proper football club for eight weeks, and it's about time. It's just disappointing we couldn't stay up for him and the fans. "I think he's been brilliant even though we haven't got the results to keep us up. "It's the first time in a long while that this place has felt like a proper football club. Things are done right and it's been a breath of fresh air. "If there's one man to get us back up, it's Alan Shearer, so I am glad the board has trusted him to lead us back into the Premier League." Devastated Meanwhile, Newcastle defender Steven Taylor, one of the Magpies' local lads, admits relegation has hit him hard. "It's the worst feeling I've had as a professional footballer. It's the worst day in our careers," he admitted. "The dressing room was like a funeral afterwards. Everybody was devastated. I've got the European Championships with England Under-21s to focus on now. That's all I can do, but this is something I'll never, ever forget. "The 3,000 Newcastle fans who came down to Villa Park are the reason you play. It's got to be an honour to play for Newcastle United Football Club. "No matter who you are, what club you have played for, you've got to give it 100 per cent every single game. It can't be like the last 10 months, when it hasn't been good enough. "I know there will be changes at this football club, but I don't know what's going to happen. As players, we haven't got a clue. "But I'd just ask the fans to stick with us next year. We'll be giving everything to get the club back up where it belongs." Kevin Nolan and Alan Smith both confirmed that they will be staying with Newcastle United. Meanwhile, Newcastle have rejected approaches from both Chelsea and Arsenal for talented Brazilian full back Miguel Chissano.
Gutierrez to wait on decision Argentine focusing on World Cup qualifiers before making club call ![]() Newcastle winger Jonas Gutierrez is to consider his future at St James' Park after Argentina's forthcoming World Cup qualifiers. The former Mallorca star, who moved to Tyneside last summer, was an unused substitute during Sunday's defeat to Aston Villa, which condemned the Magpies to Premier League relegation. There is speculation that a host of players will now leave Newcastle rather than playing Championship football in 2009/10. And Gutierrez will look at his future after the qualifiers in June as Argentina, who lie fourth in the South American qualifying zone, must beat Colombia and Ecuador in order to have a more comfortable position in the standings. Jonas told TyC Sports: "Right now, the main thing is the national team. I want to make my contribution to the team, be with the guys and I hope I can play. "Once the qualifiers pass, we'll see what will happen with my future." Meanwhile, Geremi has remained tight-lipped regarding speculation he is now set to leave Newcastle, with reports suggesting he could be heading back to Premier League with Portsmouth thought to be interested. He told skysports.com when asked about conjecture surrounding his career: "I have no comment. I am upset by our relegation." ![]() Read my Newcastle United diary Updated: 28th July Things come and go but class is permanent - Chelsea FC. |

Pre-Season Friendlies: Newcastle Utd 3 - 0 Middlesbrough Goals: Ronaldo x 3 Newcastle Utd 5 - 1 Millwall Goals: Ronaldo x 2, Barton, Jose Enrique Newcastle Utd 2 - 1 Bolton Goals: Hampton, Bruna Newcastle Utd 1 - 2 Reading Goals: Hampton Sky Sports verdict: Newcastle have looked good in their pre-season tour. Blockbuster signing and World Cup winner Ronaldo scored 5 in 2 games and if he manages to stay injury free will be sensational for Alan Shearer. He looked hungry and passionate for football. Newcastle also can boast a couple of young talented strikers in Hampton and Bruna. Barcelona and Man Utd are thought to be interested in ex-Real Madrid and Liverpool Spaniard Bruna but Newcastle denied that their £5 million evaluation has been met. Although, defensive frailties are still evident - Newcastle are hot favourites for promotion. Alan Shearer expects to make another signing or two before the transfer window shuts. El fenómeno captain Alan Shearer names Brazil striker captain ![]() Newcastle manager Alan Shearer has named new star striker Ronaldo as club captain of the St. James Park outfit this season. Shearer has been impressed with the way the 32-year-old has conducted himself since he has arrived back in June, and has praised the striker. "He leads by example, and that's a good way to lead," said Shearer. "He's not scared to give his opinion when he's right, or to say what he feels." Future captain Alan Shearer says Steven Taylor is a future Newcastle United captain. "Is Steven a future captain? Yeah, and Steven will tell you he's still got a long way to go," he told the Sunday Telegraph. "But the good thing about him is that he wants to improve, to be coached and wants to turn himself into a better player. If he does things right then he'll have a huge future in the game." Alan Shearer continued to praise the local lad. Although, praise may not be enough to keep the defender, who earlier committed himself to Newcastle, as Chelsea, Liverpool and Juventus are reportedly interested. ![]() Read my Newcastle United diary Updated: 28th July Things come and go but class is permanent - Chelsea FC. |

![]() Look Ahead Sky Sports prediction: Newcastle United are bookies favourites at 4/1 at going straight back up into Premier League. Alan Shearer has had to deal with mass-exodus of players with big name players like Martins, Owen, Viduka, Geremi, Harper and Coloccini all leaving. Shearer has gambled with his signings of South-American duo Sergio Amaury Ponce from Toluca and Falcao from River Plate. However, Newcastle boss has also added a quality centre back in Vlaar and managed to sign Yohann Pele who is an excellent prospect to fill the gap left by the departures of Harper and Given. The biggest signing, however, has to be newly appointed captain and star striker Ronaldo - it's his goals that should be the deciding factor. Should he stay fit - Newcastle should have a good return from him. In addition to new signings Alan Shearer looks to blood a few youngsters this season with Santos, Bruna, Hampton, Chissano, Shelvey, Edgar and Tozer likely to play significant part in the team this season. More importantly perhaps, Alan Shearer has managed to convince a number of star players to stay with Bassong, Taylor, Jose Enrique, Barton, Smith, Nolan, Duff, Guthrie, Gutierrez and Beye still at the club. Claudio Cacapa and Nicky Butt have both pledged their futures to Newcastle United as they are recovering from long-term injuries. Verdict: Newcastle United - should achieve automatic promotion. Star player: Ronaldo - the name says it all. One to watch: Miguel Chissano - recently named in World football Magazines 'Top 50 Young Players' list. Dark horse: Falcao - Colombian striker arrives with a big reputation and a point to prove. ![]() Read my Newcastle United diary Updated: 28th July Things come and go but class is permanent - Chelsea FC. |

Beye waves goodbye Second player to leave for Roma ![]() Newcastle centre half Habib Beye has joined AS Roma for a fee believed to be around £3.2 million. The Italian team beat the likes of Marseille, Lyon and Fiorentina to his signature. The 31-year-old was a firm favourite among the Geordie faithful and this news will come as a shock to the supporters who were left floored following relegation from the top flight. Earlier this month it appeared that Habib Beye would be staying after he seemed to commit himself to the club. Beye said: "The players who will be here this year must put this club back in the Premier League. "I'm in - I'm a Newcastle player. "I'm sad like everyone else. "I'm under contract, and I will be here next year to put this club back in the Premier League. "I have played for Newcastle for two years and I love this club." Superstar Meanwhile Newcastle United have completed a loan signing of Chelsea young starlet Scott Sinclair. The youngster arrives with a big reputation and hopes to provide competition to the likes of Jonas Gutierrez and Damien Duff. Alan Shearer said: "Scott is a fatastic player, he will be a superstar in the future. "I am glad to have him here and hopefully he can contribute to our campaign. "I also have to thanks personally the Chelsea manager for letting Scott come here and play his football." The youngster will be on loan at St James Park until the end of the season. ![]() ![]() Matchday 4 Swansea City 0 - 6 Newcastle United Goals: Ronaldo x 3, Smith x 2, Jose Enrique Sky Sports verdict: Newcastle have been criticised before for not scoring enough but they produced a stunning display and annihilated Swansea. Man of the match: Ronaldo, before he came on, the match was dull but his introduction turned the second half into a fantastic contest. ![]() Sky Sports verdict: As the transfer window shut, Newcastle head into Autumn sitting pretty at the top of the league. Although they've looked shaky at times, particular at home when pressure of the crowd has got to them - away from home, they've looked superb. Club's top scorer and captain Ronaldo is still regaining full fitness but his hat-trick against Swansea showed what a quality striker he is. Newcastle remain undefeated and with the best defensive record in the league Shearer's team is heading in the right direction. ![]() Read my Newcastle United diary Updated: 28th July Things come and go but class is permanent - Chelsea FC. |

Defender signs on Steven Taylor signs a new deal with Magpies ![]() Steven Taylor has put all the speculation of his January move away from St James Park to bed as he has penned a new contract with Newcastle United. Defender is now contracted to the club until 2014. Steven Taylor has come through the Newcastle United youth system and is a local lad and a firm fan favourite. Alan Shearer was pleased to see his defender sign a new contract: "Steven is a quality defender and we are glad to have him tied down. In the summer Chelsea, Liverpool and Juventus all made enquiries about him but we made it clear that he is a valuable player to us. "Like I've said previously, I believe that Steven is a future captain of this club. Steven Taylor was pleased to put all speculation behind him: "The club approached me about signing a new contract and I was more than happy to sign. "I've always stated that I am a one club man and after our short-comings last season I am glad we're back on track. "I have to thank Alan Shearer for putting his trust in me." Departure Meanwhile, Newcastle United have announced that Claudio Cacapa will be leaving the club in January to join Gremio. Having spent nearly half a year on sidelines with a fractured femur, Cacapa is going back to his native Brazil. The defender was one of Sam Allardyce's first signings in his short reign as Newcastle manager after he arrived from Lyon in 2007. Alan Shearer said: "We thought it would be unfair to keep a player of his quality in the reserves - he had the opportunity to leave in the summer on a free but decided to stay here and try and win back a place in the team, unfortunately it hasn't happened. "We've allowed him to leave for free and won't be asking for compensation from Gremio.
