March 2009

Liverpool FC 1 - 4 Sunderland

Fernando Torres picked up Gerrard's clever pass before putting Liverpool up in under 3 minutes. But Daryl Murphy silienced the 40,000 Liverpool fans at Anfield when he headed unmark from a corner, before putting the Black Cats into the lead with a deflected strike. Murphy soon completed his hat-trick just before half time, a low precise shot into the bottom corner.

Paul McShane completed the rout over the league leaders, making a mazing run through the Liverpool defence before playing a simple one-two and finishing it off. Liverpool's last league defeat was in September, where they were defeated by arch-rivals Everton, and will be disappointed to have lost to Sunderland in a huge margin.

Champions League Last 16 2nd Leg - Liverpool FC 2 - 0 AC Milan
(Liverpool through 4-2 on aggregate)

[source - www.mcalcio.com]

Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres repeated their heroics with a goal each to send Liverpool into the quarter-finals. Steven Gerrard's stunning strike from 30 yards lifted the roof of Anfield, before Fernando Torres slips in an inviting Gerrard pass into the bottom corner from a tight angle. It was a convincing performance nevertheless from the Reds, who dominated throughout the match. And Liverpool will now want to know who their potential opponent would be in the quarter-finals, as they are eagered to lift the Champions League trophy for the 6th time in their history.

Liverpool Drawn With 2nd Italian Giants

[source - article.wn.com]

Juventus and Liverpool will meet in the Champions League quarter-finals, the draw has revealed. Liverpool's triumph against Juventus's Italian companion AC Milan was enough to send Liverpool through 4-2 on aggregate, while Juventus overcame a strong Zenit St.Petersburg side to advance to the quarter-finals.

[source - www.liverpool.is]
Luis Garcia's stunning volley was the highlight of the tie between the two giants

Liverpool and Juventus were once paired up in 2005, the year which Liverpool won the Champions League. It was ex Liverpool player's Luis Garcia's stunning volley and Sami Hyypia's header which seals Liverpool's victory over Juventus. Liverpool will be slight favourites, having thumping AC Milan and cruising the Premier League at this point but no one can bet against Juventus.

The draw also saw Manchester United and FC Barcelona facing against each other for the 2nd time in 2 years in the competition, while Chelsea are drawn with the French champions Lyon. Arsenal though slumped to an early exit to Bayern Munich.

The full draw are the following

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich
FC Barcelona v Manchester United
Liverpool v Juventus
Olympique Lyonnais v Chelsea

Note : Can anyone see this? The draw is exactly the same as my last save game (except for Juventus and Zenit St.Petersburg) Is the draw actually fixed?

Late March 2009

Manchester United 2 - 0 Liverpool FC

[source - www.stretford-end.com]

Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs both scored in the vital 2-0 victory over a below-par Liverpool side. Despite their European triumph against AC Milan in the midweek, Liverpool failed to repeat the same performance. Wayne Rooney stroke the first in the 28th minute and Ryan Gigg finish the game off after a wonderful Ronaldo pass.

Liverpool FC 1 - 1 Aston Villa

Darren Fletcher's late equaliser extended Liverpool's games without a win to 3 as the gap between Liverpool and their closest rivals were cut down to 10 points. Steven Gerrard brilliantly picked out Yossi Benayoun to put Liverpool in front just after 5 minutes, but since then Liverpool failed to hit the target. With chance by chance missed, Darren Fletcher popped up to stroke a low but powerful shot into the bottom corner to get a point.

Our lead has been cut down to 10 points after a winless month. We can't afford to be slipping up at such a crucial point.

April 2009

Fulham 0 - 3 Liverpool FC

[source - www.metro.co.uk]

Liverpool finally regained their goalscoring touch in a 3-0 victory over Fulham. Two goals from Xabi Alonso in the opening 10 minutes puts Liverpool in total control, before David N'Gog pounded in a late goal after Lucas's effort was saved first time.

But Liverpool will be annoyed by the lost of their goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who was substituted off at half time after a thigh injury, and remains a major doubt for the Champions League tie against Juventus.

Liverpool FC 1 - 1 Juventus

Albert Riera's equaliser saved Liverpool from a defeat after Diego's blunder gave Juventus an early lead. Diego's attempt of catching a cross was a failure and the Brazilian instead drops it, leaving Iaquinta to strike it into the empty net. But Albert Riera intercepts a poor Mellberg pass and the Spaniard rifles in a shot to give Liverpool hopes ahead of their 2nd leg.

Liverpool FC 0 - 2 Blackburn Rovers

Liverpool were forced to play with 10 men in the closing stages due to Robbie Keane's late injury, with all 3 substitutes already been used. Blackburn took advantage and Schneider heads in one before Roque Santa Cruz rounded up Diego to secure a big victory.

Juventus 0 - 0 Liverpool FC
(Juventus through on away goals)

[source - www.zeenews.com]

Dirk Kuyt's controversial sending off will be the main topic of this match, nevertheless Juventus progresses to the semi-finals on away goal after having held a desperate Liverpool side to a goalless draw at the Stadio Delle Alpi. In the 10th minute, Kuyt was accused of making a violent tackle on Nedved and was immediately sent off by the referee, where the replay shows Kuyt didn't do anything wrong. With a man down, Liverpool failed to find the grip and it was Juventus who tested stand-in goalkeeper Diego throughout the match.

Liverpool's quest of lifting the Champions League all broke into shambles, and to make it worse Steven Gerrard nearly stole the victory for Liverpool in the dying seconds, his free kick delivery evades everyone before bouncing off the post and into Buffon's gloves. They will now concentrate on holding on to the lead at the top of the Premier League, where there are still on course of clinching the title.

Liverpool FC 0 - 0 Arsenal

Liverpool yet again slipped up, and their lead was cut down to 8 points. But Liverpool would have lost if it wasn't for Man of the Match Jamie Carragher, who was brilliant in keeping out Adebayor throughout the match. Liverpool is starting to struggle towards the end of the season

Hull City 0 - 1 Liverpool FC

Liverpool were boosted by the news of the returning Robbie Keane and Pepe Reina, who missed 2 weeks of action. But it was David N'Gog who stole the highlights, when the youngster showed a sublime skills to skin Gardner before the Frenchman slams an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Top quality goal and Liverpool earned the 3 points they need.

May 2009

Liverpool FC 0 - 1 Newcastle United

Liverpool yet again struggled, and it was Bassong who took advantage of poor markings from the Liverpool defenders by heading in a corner without any pressure. Chelsea have now close the gaps to 5 points.

West Ham United 0 - 2 Liverpool FC

[source - www.goal.com]

Yossi Benayoun and Fernando Torres puts Liverpool closer to the Premiership trophy when their goals gave Liverpool a much needed victory over West Ham. Yossi Benayoun nodded in Torres's cross to put the Reds into the lead and Torres himself finally broke his dry spell, his first time shot after receiving a long Alonso pass beating Robert Green in the near post.

Liverpool need a win against West Brom next week if they want to become champions.

West Bromwich Albion 3 - 1 Liverpool FC

[source - www.skysports.com]

Relegation fighters West Brom produced a world-class display as they secured a vital win over table-leaders Liverpool. It will be a result favoured by Chelsea, who will hope to steal the title away from Liverpool on the last matchday. Craig Beattie and Luke Moore scored 20 minutes into the game and James Morrison added the 3rd in the 2nd half. Robbie Keane though also broke his goal-drought with a fine header, but Liverpool's game at Spurs is a must win game, or else they would have surrender what was to be the best chance to win the Premier League.

Liverpool Wins First League Title Since 1990 In A Nervy Finale

[source - www.guardian.co.uk]

Liverpool FC 1 - 3 Tottenham Hotspur

Sunderland 1 - 1 Chelsea

Liverpool's title hopes looks to be shattered when Tottenham Hotspur surprised Anfield with 3 spectacular goals in the 2nd half but former Liverpool striker Djbril Cisse netted the vital goal for Sunderland as Chelsea's hope of preventing Liverpool from winning the trophy came to an end. Michael Dawson, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Darren Bent all scored for Spurs, although Pepe Reina did saved a Bent penalty and Riera netted a goal for Liverpool. Anfield prayed for the on-form Chelsea to slip up and Anfield went wild in the 80th minute when they heard that Cisse headed in a goal to put Sunderland into the lead.

Chelsea though needed a win and Didier Drogba snatched one back, although it wasn't enough as Liverpool was relieved not to give up the trophy after leading the league by 17 points 3 months ago.

Does Liverpool Deserve It?

To be honest, Liverpool were poor in the 2nd half of the season, and Chelsea came agonisingly close to snatch it away from Liverpool. Some fans can say that Liverpool don't deserve it, but mind you the table does not lie. Liverpool were phenominal in the first half of the season and if it wasn't for that, Liverpool would have been way off the title race.

At the end however last season's champions Manchester United endured a frustrating finish, as they could only managed a UEFA spot, with the impressive West Ham United snatching the Champions League finish, along with Arsenal and Chelsea. Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur were the other clubs taking part in Europe next season.

It was sympathy for Stoke City and West Brom, who failed to escape relegation in their first season back in the top flight, while the Manchester City side, the richest club in England, failed to convert money into victory as they were relegated into the second tier.

Fernando Torres, Salomon Kalou and Craig Bellamy all scored 17 league goals this season, meaning that the 3 of them won the golden boot award.

Ryan Thompson to Step Down Liverpool Post

Liverpool has revealed that Ryan Thompson will leave Liverpool after taking the club to its first league title in 19 years. Ryan Thompson arrived to Liverpool as an unknown person last summer but has stunned everyone when he transformed Liverpool into one of the best side in the world.

However, Liverpool began to lose their grips and nearly surrendered the 17 points lead to Chelsea, as well as being knocked out in the Carling Cup and the FA Cup by Chelsea and the quarter-final exit under the hands of Juventus, but Liverpool held on to lift the trophy.

"I am speechless to have brought smiles back at Anfield. It is a tremendous achievement. But I believed it is the best interest if I step down, I do think that someone more experience than me can guide Liverpool to more success and glory. It has been short, but it has been fantastic."

The end........
